This delightful book was written by Jory John & Illustrated by Pete Oswald
This is a book about a bad seed. A baaaaaaaaaad seed. How bad? Do you really want to know? He has a bad temper, bad manners, and a bad attitude. He's been bad since he can remember!
But, as the seed catalogues his wickedness (“I’m late to everything.... I lie about pointless stuff. I cut in line. Every time”), it becomes clear that his problem is actually impulsivity and thoughtlessness: the kind of misbehaviour that children struggle with daily. He realises that with some changes maybe he isn't so 'bad' after all.
John gives the seed a sympathetic backstory (packaged as a snack food, he barely escapes being eaten!) making him a far more complex character than his label suggests.
Oswald works with digitised watercolours to make his beautiful illustrations that capture the emotive actions and angst of our anti-hero in a touching manner. The world our protagonist moves in is full of colourful characters, from peanuts and coconuts to corn kernels, all wonderfully depicted of course, and cleverly written.
Witty and thoughtful, this book will be a treat for parents and children alike. The kind of book you go back to time and time again, this playful book is thoroughly unique and entertaining.
